Daughters of the Dust [1991] Director: Julie Dash, Cinematography: Arthur Jafa

Julie Dash’s *Daughters of the Dust* (1991) is a poetic and visually exceptional portrait of the Peazant family, part of the Gullah Geechee community living on the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina. Set in 1902, the film explores migration, ancestral memory, spirituality and the difficult tension between preserving cultural traditions and beginning a new life elsewhere. Rather than following a conventional linear narrative, it unfolds through memories, gestures, dreams and voices from different generations. The luminous 35mm cinematography was created by Arthur Jafa, who later became internationally recognised as an artist and filmmaker. His carefully composed, rhythmic images transform landscapes, faces, fabrics and movement into a powerful visual language shaped by Black history, beauty and collective memory.

La Noire De (A Preta De) – Ousmane Sembene – 1966 [french]

La Noire de… (Black Girl, 1966) is a landmark Senegalese-French film about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a French family. Through her isolation and exploitation, the film sharply examines colonial power, racism, and the loss of identity. Director: Ousmane Sembène was a Senegalese writer and filmmaker, often called the “father of African cinema.” His work focused on colonialism, social injustice, and African identity, giving voice to stories rarely seen in European cinema at the time.

LA BEAUTÉ DE L'ÂNE by Dea Gjinovci

After her father Asllan has lived in exile for sixty years, Dea returns with him to Makermal. This Kosovar village that was once his home was destroyed in the war, leaving only the stories of the survivors.
